Winnie's:
How did a Chinatown dive with mediocre drinks and a two-drink minimum become one of the hippest places in New York? That’s easy—a little pact with the devil called pay-for-play karaoke. For a buck you can embarrass yourself by singing a song from Winnie’s impressive song catalog while corny, low-budget Asian music videos play on the big screen behind you on stage. The combination of karaoke and cheap drinks brings together a wide assortment of patrons, from hipsters and Wall Streeters to employees from the nearby municipal court. Winnie’s is a social melting pot where the great equalizer is who can belt out Sinatra or Chinese pop tunes like a pro. Think of William Hung, and you’ll know what Winnie’s is about.
Good thing the drinks were cheap. I needed a few of them even to work up the nerve to perform my rendition of "When two become one," my favorite Spice Girls ballad. Baby Spice I may not be, but I still had a great time. This is the perfect place to bring out of town friends who want that quintessential "New York Experience". An ecclectic group plus the continuous flow of alcohol equals one hell of a good time, even if you cant carry a tune!
