Wildwood Barbeque
It’s grills gone wild at this big-box barnhouse, but the majority of meatheads wild’n' out here are yuppies attracted to the smell of generic newness. In the shadows of ‘cue-heavy Union Square, football field-sized Wildwood BBQ is owned by B.R. Guest Restaurants (Dos Caminos, Blue Water Grill, Primehouse New York.) Despite the chain vibe, pitmaster “Big Lou” Elrose (Hill Country) oversees food that’s a cut above Outback—minus the bland mac ‘n’ cheese. All-natural meat (no antibiotics or hormones) is the deal here, and ribs fall right off the bone. Saddle up to the 100-foot bar and wash down the spicy sauce with a large selection of beer, bourbon and cocktails like the Backyard Punch—wine and seasoned brandy. Welcome to honky-tonk for the corporate set.

The Reason NY Now Sucks

Went to Wildwood BBQ last night (5/7/08). First off, looked like they spent ENTIRELY too much money on the decor for ANY legit bbq place -- especially when some menu items were "reasonably" priced. WWBBQ didn't seem to know what it was going for -- is this a theme restaurant? What's with all the classic rock and suits? Not a good look. The service seemed good until it came time for the food to come out -- then it was piece by piece. The ribs were too fatty and lacked flavor. The Cobb salad was ok by me -- lots of blue cheese -- but how hard is it to make that? Chicken sandwich was decent, but the oh-so-special s & v chips were just NOT THAT good! Sides -- beans & cornbread were TINY and tasted fresh from the box. Everything felt very overly produced. Nothing homemade about it.
