Wildwood Barbeque: It’s grills gone wild at this big-box barnhouse, but the majority of meatheads wild’n' out here are yuppies attracted to the smell of generic newness. In the shadows of ‘cue-heavy Union Square, football field-sized Wildwood BBQ is owned by B.R. Guest Restaurants (Dos Caminos, Blue Water Grill, Primehouse New York.) Despite the chain vibe, pitmaster “Big Lou” Elrose (Hill Country) oversees food that’s a cut above Outback—minus the bland mac ‘n’ cheese. All-natural meat (no antibiotics or hormones) is the deal here, and ribs fall right off the bone. Saddle up to the 100-foot bar and wash down the spicy sauce with a large selection of beer, bourbon and cocktails like the Backyard Punch—wine and seasoned brandy. Welcome to honky-tonk for the corporate set. |
