Wicker Park: Those mourning the closing of UES standard Martell’s Grill don’t have to cry about it. With the addition of mosaic initials on a tile floor, some booths, and dressed-up pub fare like filet mignon sliders, Wicker Park is filling the neighborhood’s non-frat bar void. An after-work crowd bellies up to the 40-year-old mahogany bar to order $4.50-$7 beers, munch on ginger chicken skewers and the addictive soft pretzel and honey mustard app, and watch the game. Older folks choose to park it at tables near a mock fireplace, drink $7-$9 glasses of wine, and order “bistro” cuisine like chicken farfalle. Outdoor seating is a definite bonus, and around 10pm the Top 40 soundtrack gets cranked up for a more party-friendly atmosphere. Don’t expect to see Josh Hartnett from the movie of the same name at this unassuming pub. |
