White Star: White Star is the casual but oh-so-effortlessly-chic neighborhood bar we always wanted. Fans of Sasha Petraske (Milk & Honey, East Side Company Bar, Little Branch) will go gaga over the minimalist, dimly-lit space (even the mirror-less bathroom is lit by no more than a single candle), and cozy tables (of which there are only four). Unlike Petraske’s other joints however, there are no intricately mixed cocktails, and there is no table service. Odd, considering the master mixologist himself has been known to bartend here. Walk into the curved space with a relatively expansive white marble bar and order-up some absinthe (worth it just to see the absinthe fountain—a contraption that slowly pours ice water on a sugar cube dissolving the sugar in the glass of absinthe—and if you’re wondering why Petraske doesn’t use fire, “that’s for frat boys” he says). Campari, beer, scotch, tequila and a handful of other sipping spirits are also offered. Then try your best at scoping out some free space amidst the mixed bag of hipsters, artists, older men looking to impress their significantly younger dates, and fashionista-types looking to scope out the latest buzz-worthy Petraske joint. Open daily 8pm-3am.
