Whiskey Blue @ W New York: Another Gerber baby, Whiskey Blue is an after-work haunt for the Midtown middle management-and-up crowd that generally foregoes bars full of TVs for $12 cosmos and opposite gender scenery once the clock strikes 5:01pm. On most nights the scene dies for a little while as the after-workers head home and the W Hotel guests dine elsewhere before coming back for a nightcap. Like with Starbucks, the W bars’ strengths and weaknesses revolve around predictability. You know how to dress business-casual, you know to “write it off” to the company, and you know the music will be ’80s and ’90s pop-heavy. There’s always a bit of a pick-up scene of sorts going on, but beware Bob from Accounting who’s sitting at the bar and dying to tell somebody about his day at the office. |
