Whaler Bar at the Jolly Hotel: Come by the Whaler Bar for their recently introduced jazz series, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm to 10pm ($15 cover). It’s good that they got some tunes here, because the hotel atmosphere was needing a little livening up. The Whaler is a large open lounge complemented by a fireplace, a bit of furniture, and not much else. It’s framed on one side by a giant bar, which fills up with the mingling of hotel guests, overspill from the adjoining restaurant, and newcomers off the street. Mostly, though, this is a space for polite conversation and a listening room. Keep it in mind for a few rounds in the early part of the evening, or else rehearse some seriously captivating big fish stories to help keep whatever friends you dragged along entertained. |
