Vutera
It's easy to miss Vutera, the clandestine little wine bar that lies below Rose Live Music. With no storefront and little signage to broadcast its existence, this restaurant is about as hidden as any of New York's pervasive neo-speakeasies. Those who have managed to find Vutera hunker beneath its low-beamed ceiling to enjoy fare typical of most wine bars, such as cheese and meat plates, and various tapas dishes. The weathered barn siding and exposed stone walls give the room an antique feel but will leave you wondering whether the motif was intentional or incidental--after all, it is a cellar.

The garden?

The Garden?‎ - Jenn‎ - Today
The one thing that sold me on coming to Vutera was the beautifully photographed dining room and this 'Alice-in-Wonderland" feeling described by one patron. "Wandering into Vutera is like one of those great "Alice in Wonderland" falling- down-the-rabbit-hole moments." Well, after walking a few blocks through a grimy neighborhood on one of the hottest sticky days of the summer in August we arrive to the as-described "grungy entryway". My anticipation for this so-called Alice-in-Wonderland moment had been building since we left work. The scene: Empty. Two older gents consume beers outside while we wander aimlessly through the bar that this "gem" of a restaurant sits beneath. We walk downstairs and sure enough, the dining room was beautiful. We were chased by a busboy that deflated my moment saying, "We are seating in the garden". The garden? The busboy escorted us to this garden where we were greeted by two people who directed us towards a table. The garden was small and quaint, I could see the attraction but this was not what I came for. I was sweating in my seat trying to justify coming to the restaurant but I couldn’t even sit through a cocktail. We left immediately. The lack of music, resentment towards the hosts because my Alice in wonderland moment was ripped away and the decision to sit us in the hot humidity in the garden with no breeze made our decision the easiest. They have a beautiful dining room downstairs! Why on earth would you not use it? We will not be venturing back to Vutera.
