VON: The decade-old VON has amusedly witnessed NoHo’s transformation. Long before the boutiques and upscale eateries set up shop, homeless people used to “do their thing” between the parked cars. Ah, those were the days. Happily, though, VON has managed to keep up with the times without losing its rakish charm. A pitbull named Happy bounds around the bar, occasionally slobbering on the regulars; black-and-white photos of the turn-of-the-century Bowery hang on the yellow and white walls; and the amiable bar staff cheerfully serves up pints and offers suggestions on the tasty selection of wines, including a Chilean merlot and an Australian shiraz. Suddenly gentrification doesn’t seem like such a bad thing after all. |
