Van Diemens: Murray Hill—land of beer, button-downs, and flatscreens—gets a style upgrade with the opening of Van Diemens, a cavernous space with a party loft. The Irish and Aussie owners may call their bar "Van Diemens" after the original name for Tasmania, but it features a mostly American café menu, a large selection of brews, and a couple of plasmas. Tin ceilings, exposed brick, a glass front, and a private mezzanine with a skylight and a second bar help it stand out from the pub scene. Dim, dramatic lighting keeps the crowd looking good, and nightly DJs keep them on their feet. Just watch out for those Murray Hill i-bankers by day who fancy themselves Tasmanian devils by night. |
