Union Pool:
The great-granddaddy of bohemian Brooklyn bars is undoubtedly Union Pool. On any given night you’re bound to run into half of the people you’ve ever met in addition to spotting a starlet or local rock hero. With PBR being the official drink of Williamsburg, beer’s naturally cheap and real drinks won’t break the bank either. The photo booth is a definite draw, and the backyard’s huge space and wintertime bonfire/summertime fountain ensure that there’s always a crowd gathered. The indoors aren’t too shabby either, as the vintage detailing of the former pool supply shop still graces the walls and the bar is backed by a collection of resident cuties. Make like every other kid this side of Morgan Avenue—Unionize!
Please can I get a drink? This will be you reaction of trying to order at the bar here. The bartenders are notoriously slow, rude and too cool for school. Despite the clumsy attitudes, the bar itself somehow outshines. The decor is reminiscent of film noir and the music is rarified and soulful rockabilly with a touch of Bowie. Somehow, this makes the place one of my favorite cess pools.
