Tuts: What the hell is this place? Short answer: a Lower East Side hookah bar. Long answer: an odd smoking lounge that seems as though it should be inside a casino. Faux-gold statues surround the entrance to this Orchard Street oddity where a shimmering gold, black, and red interior is sprinkled with ottomans, tables, and hookah pipes. Behind stage curtains in back, there’s even a huge Tutankhamen bust. If it all sounds kind of tacky, that means we described it well. That said, there’s also a bit of other-worldly charm to the whole thing. If Tuts’ owners are aware of the kitsch, kudos to them. If not, well that’s too bad. Sugary specialty cocktails fuel weekend parties that can be a bit sexy in a very unimaginative but accessible way. Hot and cold mezze and Middle Eastern desserts are also available. |
