Tree: Trees in New York are used primarily as a dog's restroom, but they also remind us of rebelling to our suburban tree houses when we were mad at mommy. And obviously, once we hit our teens, we hit the tree house to sneak a smoke and drink. This Tree, however, sprouted in the East Village, is a snug spot about the size an ambitious boy scout would aim for (you'd better like your tablemate at the two top), all the while exuding classic bistro character. Exposed brick walls enclose the worn wood tables covered with fresh flowers, and eventually plates full of steak frites, escargots, and mussels, while a white pressed tin ceiling adorns from above. With as many by the glass choices as there are bottle options (around 30), the wine list aims to please. It might be the one clubhouse that’s truly open to all. All you need is a reservation, no secret knocks necessary, and thankfully, no dogs. |
