Toloache:
In a corn-chip crunch for a pre- or post-theater dinner date? Toloache’s brick oven Mexican’s got your back. Although portions are small and the prices feel a little high—just like the vaulted ceilings—savory treats like braised veal cheek tacos or carne asada are mucho satisfying. Be sure not to pass on the interesting avocado fries—though we can’t say the same for the grasshopper tacos (Fear Factor dare, anyone?). Like any good fiesta, Toloache’s cavernous mosaic-tiled space can get loud and lively, but the upscale bazaar ambience is refreshingly cheese-less considering the neighborhood. Hop here after work and catch a pre-theater three-course meal for $34—with more pesos in your pocket for a few margaritas, who cares if you’re in Midtown?
