The Stanton Social: There’s really nothing wrong with this place in itself, but it is a monolith of WASP-y yuppiness in a once rocking neighborhood that might not ever produce anything original again. The modern art-deco design is beautiful—a perfect fit for the Meatpacking District. Downstairs, a 1940s-style restaurant serves small portions of pricey comfort food that it surely deems tapas in some way or another. Upstairs, it’s a bit of a lounge scene for Upper East Siders and Eurotrash that have more money than taste. Seeing Stanton, Social, and ThoR in this neighborhood is like watching Justin Timberlake join the remaining Ramones, knowing he’s going to replace the rest of them with his friends and keep the band’s name. Those who don’t know or don’t care what this is doing to the neighborhood may enjoy the ironically named Stanton Social.
