The Standard Grill: One of the first things you'll notice as you enter The Standard Grill is a floor inlaid entirely with pennies. The message is clear: this is one place where throwing money around remains fully in fashion. It’s located right in the heart of the Meatpacking District too—even the rats wear Prada—so Balazs and Co. could have just opened the doors and cashed in on name value alone. Predictably, the food has left most underwhelmed, and the mélange of French-bistro / supper club / “biergärten” décor almost turns the place into a theme-park. You’re here to sip and scope, though, so here’s the good news: the specialty cocktail list is inspired and, actually, pretty reasonably priced. Ten dollars gets you an expertly made Sidecar or the Penny Drop, a signature vodka and ginger adventure, named after the floor you could end up on if you're not careful. You might even get your round in less than 20 minutes on a good night (key word: might). Since you're going to end up here at some point anyway—especially now that the beer garden is open—get ready for a night of smoked salt-rimmed drinks and B-Lister Bingo. |
