Part boutique, part café and yes, part tattoo parlor, this hodgepodge of retail has gimmick written all over it. The idea is that you’ll wander in, enjoy a spot of Mariage Frerès tea, browse the bizarre inventory (hats, light bulbs, vintage switchblades,) then get inked in the basement. Set it all off to a ragtime soundtrack and you’ve got the concept for The Smile. It’s charming, we’ll give it that. Salvaged wood ceilings and a brick fireplace create an inviting atmosphere. If you do in, the small plates and sandwiches, like the Manouri cheese and fig on sourdough, only $11, are worth trying. However, washing it down with a $5 iced latte is an unnecessary drain on the lunchtime finances.
