The Oak Room @ the Plaza Hotel: After a massive three-year renovation, The Plaza's Oak Bar is finally open. Snuggle into a gray banquette or ease up to a seat on the U-shaped bar amongst hoity tourists and elders reminiscing about the good ol’ days while enjoying an Oak Room Alexander, made with Appleton rum and nutmeg ($18), although the French 75 ($18), made with champagne, gin and citrus (and apparently created by a WWI “flying ace”—click for the recipe), might be a better conversation starter. A window seat gives you a framed view of Central Park. At least one of the friendly waiters has been there forever, and a piano player in the background adds to the classic New York feel. With drinks hovering around the $18 mark and a burger and fries going for $24, the gloomy recession feels light years away. (Entrees at the adjoining restaurant from Michelin-starred Joel Antunes are between $34 and $66.) But everyone should have a spot to go to feel a little bit fabulous. And no better place to do that than the Plaza Hotel. Open daily 5:30pm-2am. |
