The Irish Punt: More beachy than balmy, the warm colors of The Irish Punt offer an inviting alternative to cut-and-dry pubs of downtown Manhattan. A payphone and an old-fashioned milkshake mixer are two of the relics that have survived the bar’s facelift. Overly modern overhead light fixtures are juxtaposed with lanterns at the bar, which is also adorned with the requisite televisions (on which “Wheel of Fortune” competes with ESPN for airtime). The action at the bar seems to be controlled by a lovely Irish woman who’s friendly with customers and has an ample backlog of vulgar jokes about dirty martinis. The Irish Punt is both the pre-game bar for liquor-bent suits, and the last-call bar for neighborhood folks. Ask yourself which crowd you’d rather hang with, and choose
accordingly. |
