The Groove: Okay, so Greenwich Village has enough live entertainment to book Letterman for a decade: jazz, comedy, blues, cabaret, rock, country, you name it. But where’s da soul? Yo! It’s at The Groove. This mediocre bar, with its $4 drinks ’til 9pm, attracts tourists and bridge and tunnelers who want to hear reggae, hip-hop, soul, R&B, and funk without turning on Hot 97. The room is sparsely decorated, offering cabaret-style seating, full bar service, and pub food. Everything is centered on the stage, which holds the five or six quality bands that rotate throughout the month (psst—there’s free admission Sunday-Thursday). Don’t expect to be blown away, but The Groove does fill a void in this city’s late-night music scene. Think of it as the James Brown of bars in a neighborhood of Bob Dylans. |
