The Emerald Pub: The antithesis to SoHo, this low-frills watering hole sits in that murky, no-name territory just west of Hudson, a pretension-free zone refreshingly devoid of velvet ropes and bouncers with over-inflated…everything. Instead, there’s cold Guinness (go for a $5 20-oz.-er, because size does matter), half price drinks during happy hour, local working folks, crusty regulars trading tall tales ’bout the good old days, and decent pub grub like beer-battered fish and chips, hefty burgers, spaghetti and meatballs, and jalapeño poppers with ranch sauce. On Fridays and Saturdays, live music—mostly of the “Oh my God, this was, like, my favorite song!” variety—keeps the crowd going until the wee hours. |
