The Dove: Since opening in summer ’04, this instant classic has been a perennial Shecky’s favorite. What’s not to like? A short staircase takes visitors to these faux-Victorian confines, which boast velvety patterned wallpaper, a cherry wood fireplace that matches the bar, and white columns straight out of a Jane Austen novel. The hip and pretty bartenders are thoroughly charming. Everything here is made to look simple enough, though it’s all been well-planned. There are no beer or shots specials because that’s not the crowd they’re courting here. However, the 3pm-8pm daily happy hour offers great specialty cocktails and multiple carafes of wine, which change constantly. Jazz plays in the early hours, but when the sun goes down, the indie rock starts. Yes, this is near NYU, but never has there been a less collegiate bar. The Dove’s for people who actually want to read books. |
