The Cabin Down Below: So what’s up with all the dazed starlets stumbling out of East Village’s Pizza Shop at 4 am these days? Here’s a hint: it’s not the pepperoni—it’s The Cabin Down Below, the neighborhood’s latest speakeasy. Put another way, the marinara may be upstairs, but it's downstairs where you'll get truly sauced, as The Cabin draws an eclectic group of party people (and the occasional bold-faced name) into an unmarked basement and sets the rock-and-roll levels to stun. Ownership here is essentially the same as that of Niagara and Bowery Electric, so you'll get dim lights and a few scattered tables and bookshelves for some underground-chic. The place opens whenever they decide to (very discreetly) start checking IDs at the backdoor, and once you’re in, both the music and the strong drinks will have you feeling blasted in no time. Just don’t tip off those dudes ordering pepperoni rolls upstairs. If they ask, tell them you’re going to the bathroom, and not to bother waiting up. |
