Tavern on the Green: Like the romantic horse-drawn carriage ride around Central Park, Tavern on the Green is corny, expensive as hell, and totally worth the experience, at least once. The waiters are dressed in pastel-colored sports jackets that look like the kind worn in a South Florida retirement community, the food is fine but nothing special, and the meticulously carved hedges of King Kong and zoo animals are confounding. Only in New York. In the summer, there’s twice as much seating, most of it on the outdoor patio on a hill in Central Park. It’s not a bar scene at all, but that doesn’t mean a group of friends couldn’t get a table, soak up the unique and hilarious scene, and throw quite a few back. Reservations strongly recommended. |
