Sweet Afton: The slogan for this place is "Drink Local," and it's an ironic tagline. Because the truth is, if you were smuggled inside this upscale Astoria hide-out, you'd be hard pressed to tell if you were in Williamsburg (tattooed girls with boy haircuts), the L.E.S. (dudes with plaid shirts and graphic designer glasses) or even down the street at Dutch Kills (cement floors and earthy dark wood everywhere). But location won't matter once you get a gander at the drink menu, which combines classics like Rye Old Fashioneds with “house variations” like Dirty Pickle Martinis and very Spicy Cherry Margaritas ($8-$9). You can also “Eat Local,” indulging in burgers, sausages and beer-battered fried pickles. If nothing else, Sweet Afton is just more evidence of how much Astoria has shed the old beer-garden-and-Greek-food stereotype—pretty sweet, indeed.
