Subway Inn: Run-down and reliably cheap, Subway Inn is a trashy oasis in a neighborhood populated by posh shops and prosperous shoppers. Like a rebel student dressed in black in the back of the classroom, this bar makes no effort to fit in with the popular crowd. Subway Inn dates back to the late 1940s, and its clientele has no doubt changed over the years. Today’s patrons range from ancient regulars to alternative kids with blue-streaked locks and dark eyeliner. Beers come in bottles only, and are always $4—this crowd is too punk for a happy hour apparently—while retro cocktails like the Rum Punch go for $7 (the bar is cash-only, FYI). In an area where the next bar that opens is always trendier than the last, it’s nice to see a reliable dive right across the street from Bloomingdale’s. |
