Su Casa: You know the hidden-bar fad is out of control when one opens up above a Mexican chain restaurant (although, we must admit, we wouldn't normally think to get our drink on at Qdoba either). Nonetheless, anyone sober enough to look up into Su Casa's two huge second-floor picture windows is bound to be curious. The cluttered walls on the walk up the stairs may make you feel like you’re in a Mexican T.G.I. Friday’s but don’t worry, the cheesiness ("queso"-ness?) ends at the top. Leather benches line the bar’s long brick walls, bathed in a cooling light from the small candles set in the brick (complete with real wax drippings) in a back section overtly oozes "sexy, intimate lounge." Pretty surprising for a place that loops classic Mexican wrestling matches on the bar TV, but, if you're up front, get a seat by the huge windows, grab a fresh marg and it's almost like a luxury skybox for the West Village. Plus, how can you not love a bar that offers a cocktail (“El Diablo” – tequila, habanero peppers and Tabasco) that requires you to sign a waiver? |
