Stonewall: Years after the historic 1969 riots at this bar that launched the gay civil rights movement, Stonewall is still here, it’s queer, so go inside and have a beer. Recently renovated to include a better sound system, newer lighting, and more video monitors, this legendary West Village two-level bar continues to attract a diverse mix of gays and lesbians depending on the night. While Monday’s hip-hop party reels in the blatinos, Wednesdays and Fridays feature purely Latin fiestas. Stonewall’s most popular event continues to be Thursday’s “Detention” party, as countless college twinks pack the pop-tastic dance floor upstairs to create a gay version of Spring Break. If nothing else, Stonewall serves as a reminder that at least gays and lesbians no longer need to fight for the right to party. |
