Spice Market: This is one of the most overrated restaurants in town. There. We said it. Mind you, it’s not bad, but it’s not nearly as good as it looks. The space is beautiful, with weathered wood and ornate lanterns all around. The share-style tables upstairs are good for small groups and the textural lounge, which is at the bottom of a beautiful staircase, is a pillow-lined gem. Even the crowd and staff look great. The “Chinese street food” however, isn’t what one would expect from master chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s just as well—this more-scenester-than-foodie crowd would eat shoes if the venue’s DJ was lively, reservations were hard to get, and they read that it was good in New York Magazine. Is it Spice Market’s fault that the Meatpacking District crowd is generally lame? No. But shame on them for exploiting the situation. |
