Soy & Sake: The Smiths sang that “Meat is Murder” and city vegans know it can also be murder to find fresh options for dining out. Thankfully, they now have Soy & Sake (opened by the owners of nearby Red Bamboo), whose “sushi-inspired” soy-based menu will satiate any tofu-lust. If you’re starving, lace up your leather-free hiking boots for the “Mount Fuji”, a majestic mound of bean curd with a miso wasabi peak, served beneath a landslide of yuzu sauce. If that sounds daunting, think inside the bento box, with a generous portion of all-soy teriyaki, curry or tempura. The décor reliably follows an Asian-zen motif, including a luminous salt-water tank in the dining room’s center, wherein fish swim secure in the knowledge that they will not end up on the menu. And while the “meat” may not actually be meat, the inventive sake cocktails use liberal doses of real deal. Come dinner time, the glass-enclosed sidewalk patio is packed with hip, healthy veggie extraordinares and—willingly!—the carnivores who love them.
