Single Room Occupancy: There is no sign indicating you’ve arrived at this basement hideaway, just a faint blue light and a waiting buzzer. Inside is where the real buzz is. Exposed brick and pipes line the walkway leading into what feels like a hip dungeon filled with dangerously cool people. Framed art, visible by candlelight, adorns the walls while live music—and sometimes performance artists—entertain. Note: There is not a drop of the hard stuff to be found, but more than a dozen kinds of beer with varieties ranging from Belgium to Brooklyn and a wine list focusing on small producers more than make up for that. Since there are only a few black leather benches to be snagged, SRO lives up to its name. But mixing and mingling is what this place is about, so you won’t want to sit on the sidelines.
