Shebeen: “Shebeen” translates roughly to “speakeasy” in South Africa, Ireland, and Scotland, but the only things that feel illicit here are the devilishly strong drinks and semi-secret smoking room. The atmosphere is a little unwelcoming, unless exposed lighting tubes and unfinished wall studs are your idea of cozy. The company is older and diverse, not quite as trendy as the boutique martinis they’re drinking: imaginative concoctions you’d expect more from an amber-lit lounge in Chelsea. Reserved low tables are convenient for small parties. There’s no food, but patrons are welcome to BYO or order from the stash of menus behind the bar. After sucking down a few cherry cheesecake martinis (and really, who could resist? Vodka and cheesecake are, like, our two favorite food groups), some life-saving grease might not be a bad idea. |
