Sample: Sample’s narrow interior is hung with vintage, old-school maps—literally, those pull-down ones from elementary school—of several continents, serving as a clue as to what’s on the menu here: a sampling of little dishes and drinks from the world over. There’s no kitchen, so the snacks generally go from tin can straight to your skinny table. But Sample is (or should be) really all about the extensive, equally global drink list. Start with an excellent $6 cocktail, like the Tokyo Iced Tea (oolong tea, lemon, shochu) or Latin Manhattan (bourbon, tamarind, lime); move on to a sake, sangria, one of many European wines, or perhaps a Belgian beer; then top it off with an Australian port. Sample one or sample 10: You might get drunk, but you won’t get bored. |
