Rum House: It’s totally nautical, dude. Take some sea-faring accoutrements, wood paneling, classic cocktails, and televised sports and there you have the atmosphere of the maritime-themed Rum House at the Edison Hotel. As the older crowd recalls the glory days of smoke-filled clubs from the bottom of a beer bottle or the bowl of pretzels, outside, a youthful Midtown crowd is heading to the nearby China Club to dance off some energy. By contrast, guests and locals settle in the small space at cramped tables while swilling pints of beer. This is as “neighborhood bar with a cabaret singer” as you can find in tourists-run-amuck Times Square. Chanteuse Karen Brown serenades the crowd with Sinatra tunes while stroking the ivories of a piano (Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30pm-1:30am). A crowd also gathers for the daily happy hour (5pm-7pm). Mainly, however, people are checking out the game and lottery results while others sit at the bar like sailors at their favorite port. |
