Rockwood Music Hall: This little place is so cute and even noble, that its having survived for more than a year is a bit of a surprise. The single room seems too small to host a bar, let alone a live music venue featuring a stage with a great big piano. The LES used to offer a cornucopia of intimate music venues, but now, places like this are few. Expect to hear Norah Jones-type stuff played by musicians who never request a cover charge. The half of this room that isn’t on stage is a wine and cheese parcel where friends of the musicians share elaborate snack trays, inexpensive wines, and flavorful beers. Rockwood Music Hall seems especially warm in the winter when the close quarters cause the big window facing Allen Street to fog up in a hurry. One wouldn’t come here for anything other than performances, which isn’t to say the 5pm-7pm happy hour isn’t tempting. |
