Rachel's Taqueria:
This eclectic California-style Mexican bar and grill has a fetish for bright red flames: Most notably, on the brand-new neon lights outside the now impossible-to-miss Park Slope favorite. Flames also decorate the surfboards hanging from the ceiling and the hammerhead shark mounted on the wall. A not-so-subtle warning of the spicy food? Maybe. The East L.A.-raised owner started out running taco carts before launching Rachel’s (and her sister, Park Slope Taqueria at 74 7th Ave.), and the cooks don’t shy away from real-deal Mexican tastes. The chipotle shrimp tacos are so addictive their secret ingredient might as well be Tijuana crack. Beyond the food, Rachel’s bar scene is a guaranteed fiesta, especially on the patio in the summertime. Inside, the mix of classic rock and Mexican pop—both in music and atmosphere—makes this the perfect place to gulp down pitchers of blender drinks before hiking over to The Bell House down the street for a concert.
