Playwrights Tavern: This Tavern’s ode to Emerald Isle raconteurs attracts youthful Midtown suits and some intrepid tourists. Like infamous Irish imbibers Behan, Joyce, and Yeats (all to be found on the menu), gregarious collegiate-like crowds congregate around the polished bar and have their orders taken from the friendly, mostly Celtic crew of wait staff and bartenders. Located near the heart of Times Square, Playwright boasts a healthy throng of pre- and post-Broadway attendees who may try to squeeze in downstairs for one of the dozen beers on tap or a frothy classic cocktail, before heading up to the restaurant and upstairs bar for (you guessed it) Irish-American pub grub and a discourse on the latest “theatrical” offerings.
