Pete’s Tavern: Though former regular O. Henry is its claim to fame, don’t expect Pete’s Tavern to be a muse for brilliance—these days it’s unlikely you’ll pen a piece of classic lit at this beer drinker’s bar. That said, the historic bar/Italian-American restaurant has a certain special neighborhood vibe that only a place that’s kept its doors open for nearly 150 years can offer the 21st-century crowd. And the tourist hook hasn’t let the place go cheesy; it tends to be inhabited by low-maintenance locals. The selection of tap beers will likely be intoxicating customers into the next century too, but if you’re looking for something special try the eponymous 1864 Original House Ale. And even though the place defied prohibition, posing as a flower shop, don’t expect Bloomberg rebellion—you’ll have to step outside for a smoke. |
