Screw frilly formalities. Pao doesn’t mess with them and frankly, neither should you. Pao means “bread” in Portuguese and this straightforward approach applies to everything at this crowded little haunt. Pao screams authenticity, both on its menu (try the glazed seafood) and on their drink list (stocked with green wines and obscure Portuguese beer). If you’ve never tried either of these beverages before, don’t worry—you’ll be seated so close to fellow diners that you can probably try a sip of theirs. If making chit-chat with a stranger isn’t your forte then Pao may not be the place for you, but with food this good (and a location this key), it’s a great way to start off your night.
