P. J. Hanley's: It claims to be the oldest bar in Brooklyn, so it’s odd to call P.J. Hanley’s a work in progress. But this Carroll Gardens pub is definitely under transformation, as it continues to dig itself out from a string of management changes that would’ve sunk a less established place. Still, P.J's still has one major asset: The nicest patio in the city. First of all, it’s huge (200 capacity), so you’ll always get a seat. Second, it offers an escape from the flat-screen assault that is the indoor portion of this (and most) bars. Third, you can’t beat the setting, as tiki lights and low fences frame a panoramic view of a brownstone-lined street corner. Once you’ve settled in, not even the distant din of loud-mouth Yankee fans can sully the vibe ("JEEEE-TAHHH!"). If you’re tempted to give the menu a go, the relatively outré choices, such as falafel mini-sliders ($5), tend to outshine the standard pub fare, like the burger, ($10). Actually, for best results, keep it simple and enjoy P.J. Hanley’s for what it is: A good neighborhood spot for drinks outdoors. Then, check out the pizza place next door.
