P & G Café: The wood paneling and yellowish glow to the lighting suggest a bar that’s stayed true to its 63-year-old roots. The autographed Bucky Dent photo behind the bar and family-style picture frames around the rest of the place drive the point home—this is the grandpa of bars. The bar is long enough and there are plenty of booths to accommodate the crowd, which runs the gamut in terms of age and experience. Everyone gets along fine in this dusty pine box of a corner bar, and even non-regulars are welcomed without a second look. This place is low-rent, but comfortable, with the staff mingling easily with the clientele. Despite its humble appearance, something about it suggests a wealth of New York stories within its walls, as it should, since this place is old enough to have been at Bill Clinton’s birth. |
