P & G Bar: P & G Bar—the Upper West Side’s most infamous neighborhood bar—has inconspicuously reopened on Columbus Avenue after a successful 66-year run on Amsterdam. Manned by the former friendly crew, the bar provides a trickling number of die-hard, dive-bar locals (many of whom are the same age as the original bar) with cold beers and unpretentious cocktails. The space is three times that of the previous P & G and mainly consists of four bleak rooms, two pool tables, a live-music area and scattered stools and tables. In addition, the bar now offers a happy hour from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Yet even with good faith, one must wonder if we should just let our favorite local bars rest in peace—minus the nostalgia of its old block, this sequel won’t be a blockbuster. |
