Ostia: Imagine a glass of sangria that actually tastes more like wine than jungle juice. The owners of Ostia wouldn’t dare serve you the watered-down red stuff at their pressed-tin West Village establishment. Instead, you’ll drink the authentic stuff—an exceptionally aged, thick, Rioja Reserva soaking the fruit. The sangria is perfect company for classic mouth-watering tapas such as the jambon wrapped around dates. There are also over 25 bottled Spanish wines on the menu, and every day there’s a new wine-of-the-day by the glass, “depending on the weather.” Everything at Ostia seems to be “do as the Spaniards do”—even the sushi-like tapas cooler atop the bar. Too bad they don’t open early for siesta. |
