Orchid: Facing the sidewalk with 10 glass-paneled frames, this greenhouse exterior houses a bizarre concoction of decorating styles, though theres no mistaking that you're in the Flower District. Palm trees form a line down the center of this spacious, lofty bar, with scattered, minimalist cube seats, booths, and the odd leather couch keeping a mix of hip 20-somethings, yuppies, and the middle-aged firmly planted on their keisters in this open space. Oddly shaped cut-outs in the wall give the impression that the attempted new twist on exposed brickwork was not quite a success, and live jazz music on weekend afternoons isnt going to do much for the nightlife scene. While the staff is friendly, the variety of drinks impressive, and the menu of pasta and burgers tasty, Orchid still has some growing to do. |
