Mugs Ale House: Mugs’ worn oak furnishings hint at Catholic school, but the easy-going space is a house of worship for something even closer to the Irish heart. This bar was made for drinking. With dozens of beer drafts available, the place isn’t called Mugs for its hot cocoa. Beer mugs representing the staggering selection hang in garland-like ornamentation around the room. And a buzzed, after-work, oddly scarce-in-hipster crowd fills the front tables and bar as well as the back restaurant area. But even as a stream of post-work types pour in from the L, the rock juke-infused Mugs keeps calm with its spacious layout and friendly bar staff. But come September we wonder whether we’d prefer hipsters to the Red Sox fans that run rampant here. When Johnny Damon shaving quips fail, a round of Arrogant Bastard Ale maintains their BAC and your dignity. |
