Mr. Jones: There’s a new guy in town, Mr. Jones, have you heard of him? Sure, he showed up about three-weeks late, but he’s got the best intentions on this East Village block. Walking into a small foyer area, you’ll be greeted by eager hostesses and an aquarium. The dim lighting, orange and brown hues, big wraparound bar and cozy banquettes make for a perfect autumn date spot. The food from chef Bryan Emperor is right on cue as well; three different yakitori plates—try the kobe beef meatballs filled with foie gras ($16) or the chicken kara yuzu skewers ($8)- make for a satisfying meal for two for about $40. There’s a huge selection of sake, but it’s not as cheap as the grub. The Otokoyama is a good one, but served in a small wine glass at $10 a pop makes trying to get tipsy pricey. But overall, the young, curious diners seem to love thy neighbor. It looks like owner Lesley Barnard (Tillman’s) gave him a thorough background check before welcoming him into the ‘hood. Open daily 6pm-12am. |
