Moonshine
The peanut shell-strewn, wood-planked floor speaks of this countrified bar’s unpretentiousness—as does its out-of-the-way location, circa the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel entrance. Beer and whiskey rule at Moonshine; the third part of its tagline, “bulldogs,” is represented by the two live ones strutting around, the owner’s pets. The jukebox, heavy on country rock and bluegrass, is very well regarded, and you can’t beat the cheap cans-in-a-bucket or the bring-your-own-meat (BYOM) grilling policy for the backyard BBQ and slow smoke cooker. Young and old, hip and somewhat scary, the exceptionally mixed crowd shares the dartboard, pool table, and arcade games in a cluttered space lit with neon signs and filled with worn leather couches. Remote and rough around the edges, this is like Brooklyn’s Wild West—which, of course, ultimately translates to “very cool” in barspeak.

Come On Down Ya'all

Yeah, I was thrown off by the country bar at the end of my block. But I have moved in . . . it is hard to escape once you are in the bar. The only thing to improve is the consistency of all the bartenders. Some are ok, only a few are GREAT.
