Montero’s Bar & Grill: Montero is the ideal bar in which to drown your sorrows in cheap drinks. Heck, it’s even hung with life preservers, a throwback to its earlier incarnation as a hangout for sailors, likely those same guys who now crowd the walls in black and white photos. This is one of those easily ignorable, been-there-forever places, but the rare local flavor here should be savored for the beer-soaked taste of old Brooklyn it provides. Arcade games, TVs, and an old-fashioned jukebox join the bar’s nautical bric-a-brac—including a 1950s electric-powered replica steam engine—and lead to a gated-off pool table. An old kitchen in the back still operates for special occasions, accounting for the “grill” in the name; like some patrons here, it’s seen better days, but has stories yet to tell. |
