Momofuku Ssam Bar: Ssam Bar is the much-hyped offshoot of the East Village insta-hit Momofuku Noodle Bar. Mere blocks from the mothership, Ssam Bar is simpler and speedier. Décor is as minimalist and welcoming as an IKEA showroom; the space is often as crowded too. But the food is the real draw—if you’re thirsty, you’d better be yenning for beer, sake, or sparkling wine cause that’s what’s on the menu. These are, of course, perfect pairings for your menu options—the titular ssam (kind of a Korean burrito), a rice bowl, or a delish steamed bun. Patrons add or subtract ingredients and the results range from mediocre to fabulous. But the real party gets started in the late-night hours (10:30 and on), when off-the-menu options are rolled out and vibe gets conspiratorial and interesting. |
