Miss Favela: Miss Favela, or Miss Shantytown as the translation goes, manages the difficult feat of taking you out of Brooklyn and placing you in a scene that's slummy, hip, and clean all at once. Located almost directly under the Billyburg bridge, Miss Favela offers a breezy, colorful Rio-inspired retreat away from the hubbub of downtown hipsterville. While loud samba music blasts through this corrugated metal space (complete with graffiti-splattered bathrooms), you won’t find shantytown prices here—although not having food from a shantytown is the upside. Expect dishes and desserts particular to Brazil as well as traditional drinks like the caipirinha (cachaça, sugar and lime) and batidas (cachaça and fresh fruit), like the batida de maracuja (passion fruit) and batida de coco (coconut milk). Down a few of those and you’ll be sashaying your way to nearby Bembe in no time. |
