Mercer Kitchen: Is it possible to have a lively night out in a seemingly underground mausoleum space? Judging by the state of the subways, one would be inclined to say no, but then you’ve obviously never experienced what Jean-Georges Vongerichten has to offer. His tomb-like Mercer Kitchen is encased in aged brick, with arches over several passageways to various dining areas to furnish a tunnel quality throughout. Urban underground flair is perpetuated with grate ceilings overhead, but don’t feel trapped because illuminated mirrors on every wall make claustrophobia impossible. Sprawling and shiny in all the right places, Mercer Kitchen is the perfect place for a high-end drink, but eat somewhere else if you don’t want to get acquainted with your bank’s overdraft policy. |
